Surfboards Surfboards--History |
Description | Phil Edwards, considered one of the first “power surfers” of the 1960s for his incomparable turns, was honored with Hobie Surfboards’ first signature model surfboard in 1963. Hailing from Dana Point, California, Edwards is, among other things, known as the first surfer to successfully ride the notorious Pipeline surf break on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. This board is made of polyurethane foam sealed in fiberglass, which emerged as the standard surfboard materials in the late 1950s, replacing balsa. Although today’s boards are lighter and less dense, polyurethane foam remains the base material for nearly all modern surfboards. |
